Local and State Wheel the World Partnerships Increase Accessible Travel
Advancing a Key Strategy of the Destination Stewardship Strategic Plans
As the CTO launches its groundbreaking Destination Stewardship Strategic Plans, it introduces a new initiative focused on a core principle: providing welcoming, inclusive, and accessible experiences for all.
Announced in August 2024, the CTO Accessible Travel Program invites destinations across Colorado to apply for support in amplifying accessible spaces. This pilot program, in partnership with Wheel the World, provides facilitated working groups, on-site assessments, stakeholder education, Wheel The World booking solutions, free online training, and recommended next steps.
Wheel the World empowers travelers with disabilities to explore without limits, providing detailed information about accessibility and specialized customer support throughout the entire travel experience. This service allows travelers with various disabilities to find and book accessible experiences and excursions around the world.
The new CTO pilot program draws inspiration from Visit Colorado Springs (VCOS), known as Olympic City USA and home to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Training Center and Museum.
With a 2023 CTO Tourism Management Grant of $20,000, the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitor Bureau improved its accessibility information and earned an official Destination Verified Seal from Wheel the World. CTO Tourism Management Grants support projects that develop, enhance, and manage visitor experiences in Colorado.
“The visitor experience starts in the planning phase, researching options online,” said Doug Price, President & CEO of Visit Colorado Springs. “Ensuring that our city is accessible to athletes and potential visitors is imperative.”
As an early adopter of this program, VCOS conducted an accessibility audit of more than 30 businesses, attractions, and hotels in the Pikes Peak Region. Each participating business received a detailed report with improvement recommendations and access to Wheel the World Academy, which offers training to enhance staff knowledge of accessible tourism.
To explore the accessible trails, attractions, activities, adventures, and lodging, visit the VCOS website and view the Colorado Springs listings on WheelTheWorld.com. Apply for the Accessible Travel Program if you are interested in seeking CTO support to amplify accessible travel in your destination.
